Better picture coming :)
For February, we are going to spotlight our second of three local pros. This month we are going to find out a little more about Jeff Adams, GM/Director of Golf at Whispering Creek in Sioux City.
For those of you who don’t know much about Adams, he was born and raised in Lincoln, NE.
Jeff went to college at UNL but like many young and stupid college kids (his words, not ours) he was doing a little too well selling TVs and stereos at Sears and decided to quit school and work for Sears in numerous jobs and locations across the midwest.
In 2001, Adams decided he wanted to do something he really loved so he moved to Arizona and graduated from the Arizona Golf Academy in 2003. After graduating, he stayed in Arizona for a while and worked as a tournament director. Eventually, the call was to move back to the midwest and he started by working at Indian Creek in Omaha before moving back to Sioux City to work at Dakota Dunes when they reopened after the 2011 Missouri River flood.
For the past three years, Adams has been the General Manager / Director of Golf at Whispering Creek and is really loving it. In his words, "Whispering Creek is a pure golf club. If you want to play a great course that is in excellent shape and then hang out with a great bunch of people after your round, you really can't beat The Creek!"
Adams has been very busy at "The Creek" this past year. He and the staff are constantly trying to improve the golf course. One of the most notable improvements was changing out the bunkers to a sod-face front. The clubhouse was remodeled this past winter, giving it a whole new, fresh look that patrons are sure to enjoy. Another big step is that of bringing in a whole brand new fleet of EZ-GO Lithium Golf Carts with built in GPS for this spring of 2023. The clubhouse also added a golf simulater and they have been active with an indoor winter league as a result of that. Along with the fun of playing indoor golf it allows many to get in winter practice time or to come in and get fit for new golf clubs before the season gets started.
Whispering Creek hosts their Invitational and over the last few years it has become one of the double point events counting toward Siouxland Player of the Year. With both an Open and a Senior division, this tournament provides a completely different look and feel than most would expect. They even host a dinner and calcutta as part of the tournament.
Now, let's see how Jeff does on the back 9...
Which professional golf tournament is your favorite, and why?
I would say the Masters is my favorite tournament of the year. You can't beat the history and the beauty of the place. On the opposite end of the spectrum, you can't beat the Phoenix Open for a pure entertainment experience. If you haven't been to it in person, I would recommend you go if you have a chance. The atmosphere is something that you can't see anywhere but there.
What has been your best golf moment up to now?
My best personal golf moment is when I shot a 63 at my old stomping grounds from high school, Pioneers golf course down in Lincoln. I was -8 thru 11 holes. It was the only time I've really felt that choking feeling playing golf. I stepped up on the twelfth tee and I could feel my body and swing change as I realized that this could be a really amazing round. I managed to shoot even par from that point on but it was a struggle. It made me appreciate even more how good those guys are on tour that have real money or a tournament win on the line and they still hit the shots that they do. I don't come anywhere near shooting like that anymore but it's a great memory.
How many hole-in-ones have you had and how many have you witnessed?
I haven't had any hole-in-ones, yet, hopefully. I have holed out 7 shots on par 4s for eagle but no one cares about that. I have witnessed 4 hole-in-ones. The best being when I was playing with a member at Indian Creek and we had a single come up behind us. We got up to the green and waved him on to play through and it hit the front of the green and rolled right into the cup. Great for him because it was early in the morning and the only other people on the course were the mowers.
Describe your ultimate finishing hole (can exist already or one you imagine).
I am biased but I think #18 at Whispering Creek is just about everything I want in a finishing hole. You can make a 3 or 9. The tee shot is tough with trees and a lake on the left with bunkers on the right. If you hit a good drive, do I go for the green in two or do I take the safe route and layup?, and then you have to hit the right spot on a three tiered green.
What would be your ultimate foursome (you included)?
My dream foursome would be me, Bill Murray, John Daly, and David Feherty. I don't know how good the golf would be but the stories that you would hear would be amazing. And I would bet I would have a few stories to tell of my own after that day.
Related to golfing, what is there about you that nobody really knows?
I can't think of anything special that no one know about me and golf that I haven't mentioned already.
With our Midwest golf season of 7 months, do you ever get to warmer climates to play golf in the other 5 months?
I have gone down to Oklahoma for a few days the last couple of years. But with the Creek being open year-round depending on the weather it's been hard to get away.
In the Siouxland area, amongst all golf courses (excluding your own course), what is your favorite:
a. Par 3 Hole
No. 8 at Landmand
b. Par 4 Hole
No. 11 at The Ridge
c. Par 5 Hole
No. 1 at Landmand
Who/What was the primary influence for you to play golf?
My biggest influence in golf was my grandfather. He taught me the game when I was young. I still remember the first time I beat him, he was so proud. Then he made sure he waxed me the next time we played. He really appreciated not just the golf lessons, but also the life lessons about how to handle yourself as a gentleman, and learning that how someone handles themself on the golf course is a good judge of how they handle themselves in the rest of their life.
